Iquitos: De la Selva su encanto (parte 2)

Cuentan en la selva la leyenda del Chullachaqui. Este personaje es un diablillo que adopta diferentes formas (de un conocido o de un animal) y busca adentrarte en la selva y extraviarte. Muchos lo consideran un protector de la selva, ya que suele aparecerle a cazadores o personas que no respetan el entorno. El nombre proviene del quechua Chulla= Desigual y Chaqui = pies, el chullachaqui tiene pies de cabra, esa es la única manera que podrás identificarlo.

In the rainforest you can hear de legend of Chullachaqui. This character is a kind of "jungle goblin" that may adopt various forms ( a friend of yours, a relative even an animal) and it´s mission is to make you get lost in the jungle. Some people consider him the rainforest protector because it usually appears to hunters o people who don´t respect the jungle. The name comes from the Quechua Chulla= different and Chaqui= feet, The Chullachaqui has goat feet,that is the only way you can identify him.

Existen muchas leyendas de este tipo en la selva. La verdad que no me considero una persona supersticiosa. Pero creo 2 cosas:

1 Si existe un lugar donde ser superticioso probablemente sea en la selva. Existen miles de sonidos de aves que parecen demonios y recorriendo sola por la noche las trochas te puedes confundir.

Por ejemplo el Hoatzin, es un ave prehistórica que habita la selva de Iquitos, parece un sajino jadeando.

2. La mayoría parecen ser metáforas sobre el respeto de la naturaleza o bien cómo manejar el miedo en la selva, por ejemplo el Tunche, si más miedo le tienes más vendrá a por tí.

There are a lot of legends at the Amazon. The truth, I don´t consider myself superstitious. But I believe 2 things:

1. If there is a place to be superstitious, this is it. They are a lot of birds sounds that are quite demon-like, and walking at night by the jungle you can easily get confused. For example the Hoatzin, a prehistoric bird that lives in Iquitos Rainforest, it gasps like a wild pork.

2. Most of this leyends seem to be metaphores of the respect to the enviroment and how to handle fear in the jungle, for example the Tunche, if you´re scared of this spirit it will continue to haunt you.

Tuvimos la gran oportunidad de ir a la Isla de Monos, allí disfrutamos del contacto directo con animales tales como perezosos, monos capuchinos, monos ardilla, monos araña, tucanes, coatís incluso  anacondas! Lo lindo del lugar es que los animales corren libres por la isla, una familia se encarga de alimentarlos  y están totalmente acostumbrados al contacto humano (salvo por la anaconda).

We had the great opporunity to go to Monkey Island, there we enjoyed direct contact with animals such as sloths, monkeys, toucans, coatí even anacondas!

The nice thing about this place is that the animals run free around the island, a family of locals take care of them and feeds them, so they are completely used to human contact (not the anaconda of course)
